So you are planning on buying your first guitar and you really don’t have any idea what type of guitar to begin your endeavor. Besides the obvious consideration of price, you must also have an idea of what type of guitar you wish to play. You have three basic choices. The classical acoustic with its nylon or gut strings, the acoustic with steel strings, or the electric guitar which will require an amplifier.

Many first time buyers end up with a classical acoustic since they are sold at every large department store. They will give you an idea of what is required to learn how to play a guitar. If you purchase a cheap model you will find that they will not keep tune for more than a quick song and that the sound is not something you would want others to be experiencing as you practiced. If you stay away from the low end of these guitars you may find a reliable model that will at least keep a tune for $60-$100.

As a personal choice I’ve always found that the steel stringed acoustic was a good starting point. You would be able to learn the sensations of using steel strings while not disturbing the family members to a point of revolt because of loud playing. Depending on the amount of time you put into practicing and your learning curve you could be ready to graduate to an electric guitar in a short amount of time. For this reason I don’t recommend spending a large amount of money of the steel string acoustic.

If you choose to move on to an electric guitar don’t go overboard on the price. I would probably recommend going with a low end model for you first electric guitar. It will allow you to become familiar with the different settings that can be performed along with the many different sounds that you will be able to produce. The electric guitar requires amplification, so an amplifier must be included with your guitar purchase. Once again, don’t go overboard on the amplifier. You don’t need all of the bells and whistles that the more expensive amplifiers provide nor do you need the excess volume. Amplifiers are one of the benefactors of our electronic age in that they have gone up in quality and down in price over the last 20-30 years. You will be able to pick up a 10 watt amp for a small amount and it will provide plenty of sound for all of your practicing.

The auction sites online offer many beginner packs which offer a guitar, amplifier, case, pick and other extras to get you started at a very reasonable price and which will allow you to begin playing a guitar. After you’ve mastered a few basic chords with a little practice, and have a vague understanding of beat, you will be playing songs that others can recognize. It will give you a feeling of accomplishment and that extra push that will make you want to practice more and elevate your style.

Just remember that if you truly fall in love with playing a guitar, your first guitar will definitely not be your last. Every day you will be learning more about the instrument and what can be accomplished. It can become a lifelong passion.
